Interested in Tax? Register for the ABA Tax Section Meetings

The Diversity Pipeline Task Force of the American Bar Association (ABA) Tax Section are working to raise awareness among students from underrepresented groups with regard to opportunities in tax practice.  Their ranks are comprised of both women and people of color from law firms, accounting firms, and the IRS.

Students (and, especially diverse students) are encouraged to attend the May meetings of the ABA Tax Section.  Tuition is waived for law students, and the meetings will run from May 12-14, 2022, in Washington, D.C.  The meetings may also be attended virtually

The students would have access to the full calendar of ABA tax meetings, and we recommend that students consider attending the presentations of the Young Lawyers Forum.  In addition, we have identified some panels that we think will be interesting and especially accessible to students. To date, we have identified the following programs that may be of particular interest to students:

Bridge to Practice, including A Practical Introduction to Transactional Tax and Deal Work (Thursday, May 12, 1:00 – 4:00 PM)

Tax Policy & Simplification, Making the Sausage II: How Treasury Regulations and Guidance are Drafted and Promulgated (Friday, May 13, 8:00-9:15 AM)

S Corporations, Back to Basics – Income and Distributions (Friday, May 13, 11:50-12:35)

Diversity, Racial Disparities and the Income Tax System (Friday, May 13, 4:30-5:30 PM)

Young Lawyers Forum (Friday, May 13)

Virtual Currencies (Part 1): What are they are how are they taxed? (3:30-4:30 PM)

Virtual Currencies (Part 2): NFTs, DeFi Transactions, and Other Virtual Currency Transaction Issues (4:30-5:30 PM)

Students may choose to participate in any or all of these programs, as well as attending any other panel on the tax section calendar.  For those students who will be attending live, the Task Force is planning a meet-and-greet as part of the Thursday evening Young Lawyers and Tax Section receptions.  During those events, Task Force attorneys will be available to chat with students and answer questions about practice and life as a tax practitioner.   The registration link for the conference is here:  Welcome – Hybrid 2022 May Tax Meeting (cvent.com)

Students who have taken (or are currently taking) Tax 1 should be able to benefit from the event.
