Recognizing a Few Local Native American Tribes

As Stetson Law continues to recognize National Native American Heritage Month, we want to highlight a few local Florida Native American tribes. The Tocobaga Tribe lived in chiefdoms located from Pinellas County through Sarasota in the 900s – 1500s. The Seminole Tribe of Florida has more than 5,000 Tribal members today. They continue their traditions of sewing, patchwork, chickee building, and alligator wrestling. The Seminole Tribe has a reservation in located Tampa as well as across the state of Florida. The Miccosukee Tribe today has over 600 members and three reservation areas in Florida, the Tamiami Trail, Alligator Alley, and Krome Avenue. Individuals can go on airboat tours, visit their museum, and witness alligator demonstrations at the Miccosukee Indian Village.
