Stetson Does It Again—Awards in All Three Categories at the National Championship

Please join me in congratulating the members of the Hunton Andrews Kurth moot court team of Tyler Brown, Nancy Eriksen, and Rylie Pennell.  But before a discussion of their accomplishments over this weekend, a note about the competition itself.

The Hunton Andrews Kurth National Championship is the super bowl of moot court competitions.  This invitation-only event that includes the top 16 teams from around the nation.  Invitations only go to the best of the best, given the school’s record the previous year.  This year’s competition included teams from moot court powerhouses, such as Baylor, South Texas, Texas Tech, MSU, Georgia, Chicago Kent, and more. Over the three-day competition, teams participate in four preliminary rounds before the elimination rounds, and as you can imagine, the competition is fierce, with rounds won by only tenths of points.

Back to the Stetson team:  In true Stetson fashion, the team won awards in not one, not two, but all three award categories—individual oralist, brief, and team.

  • Nancy earned the third-best oralist award.
  • The team earned the third-best brief award, and
  • the team was semifinalists (losing a close round to the team who went on to win the competition).

And Stetson was the only team at the competition that won awards in all three categories. This is quite a feat, especially, at the national championship.

And it takes a community to prepare a moot court team for competition, especially this competition. Very special thanks go out to Judge Allen, Professor Adams, Professor Anderson, Professor Lake, and Professor Virelli, for their assistance and support, as well as all the Stetson alums who judged the team.  Thank you!

Congratulations, Tyler, Nancy, and Rylie!
