Summer Externship Opportunity with the Law Library of Congress
The Global Legal Research Directorate provides high-quality, timely, and cutting-edge research on United States, foreign, comparative, and international law to the U.S. Congress, U.S. federal courts, executive agencies, and the public. The Directorate is comprised of thirty-five legal and information specialists, complemented by research analysts and editorial support staff.
The extern will work under the supervision of a Law Library staff attorney and participate in ongoing research projects relevant to legislation under congressional consideration. The extern will contribute to legal opinions, briefs, reports, research papers, memoranda, and comparative analyses concerning laws and legal systems across jurisdictions in response to inquiries from Library of Congress patrons. Assistance with the preparation of congressional and judicial hearing testimony may also be required. In addition, the extern will assist in the development of the Law Library’s online products and collections.
The extern will have the opportunity to participate in research briefings and orientations conducted by Law Library staff, attend scholarly programs at the Library of Congress, and network with lawyers and legal scholars at the Library and throughout the Washington, DC area. The Law Library collaborates with the Federal Bar Association to facilitate externs’ participation in a Capitol-wide summer program connecting them with staff attorneys and interns/externs across federal agencies.
