Voter Action Pinellas: Fall Pro Bono Opportunities

Voter Action Pinellas (https://www.voteractionpinellas.org/), a nonprofit voter advocacy group, has pro bono opportunities available for students who can commit to at least fifteen hours during the fall. We can structure an unpaid internship with a commitment of at least forty hours, and can provide sixty or more hours for students interested in fulfilling their entire pro bono commitment this fall

  • The internship can include legal and/or nonlegal work, and is available for students at any stage of their studies. We’ll provide training as necessary.
  • These are remote projects, without any required in-person meetings or specific scheduled work hours.

Legal Pro Bono

Election Law Legal Research

Research election law applicable to Pinellas County local government elections (including municipal, fire district, and school board elections), state and federal races, and ballot questions. Prepare educational materials for voters.  Research will cover the election schedule, primary and general election voting rules, candidate qualifying procedures, and procedures for including charter amendments and other questions on the ballot. 

Voter Rights Legal Research

  • Research law applicable to restoration of voting rights for Returning Citizens (citizens with felony convictions). Prepare steps for research of criminal records of Returning Citizens to determine eligibility for restoration of voting rights. 
  • Prepare a summary of the impact of recent statutes imposing restrictions on voter registration and vote by mail. 
  • Prepare summaries of voter identification, residency, and other requirements for casting a ballot by mail or in person.

Nonlegal Pro Bono

Voter Registration Initiative

  • Participate in voter registration outreach in underrepresented communities (optional in-person activity).

Voter Education Communications

  • help develop effective design elements for the Voter Action Pinellas website and for voter education and volunteer training materials
  • prepare volunteer training material.
  • assist in website management
  • assist in graphic design projects

Data Analytics

Work under the guidance of an experienced data analytics professional to:

  • analyze data from the Pinellas County Supervisor of Elections voter file to help build strategy for effective voter outreach
  • build data solutions, tools, and capabilities to support voter outreach volunteers and educate voters
  • work with leadership to identify process improvement opportunities, propose system modifications, and devise data management strategies to improve data quality and accessibility
  • use statistical tools to identify, analyze, and interpret patterns and trends in complex voter data

Data Management

Work under the guidance of a data scientist to:

  • learn and practice effective data management for voter outreach in common campaigns tools such as Reach and VAN (Voter Activation Network)
  • manage the voter file provided by the Pinellas County Supervisor of Elections
  • assist in writing and implementing programmed solutions to better manage voter data and improve voter outreach

Interns should have some familiarity with (or a willingness to learn) R and/or Python.

Gulfport’s Pink Flamingo Home Tour March 1st – Nonlegal Community Service Hours

Students would volunteer to be home greeters.  Welcoming guests and checking tickets.  Helping homeowners direct “traffic”. Learning about their neighbors in Gulfport and becoming part of the community.

The Gulfport Merchants Chamber is proud to present the 20th Annual Pink Flamingo Home Tour, scheduled for Saturday, March 1, 2025, from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. This year’s tour will showcase a dozen unique homes throughout Gulfport, offering attendees an intimate look at the city’s distinctive architecture and vibrant community spirit.

The Pink Flamingo Home Tour has long been a cherished tradition in Gulfport, drawing visitors and residents alike to celebrate the city’s rich history and eclectic charm. This year’s event holds special significance as the community continues to recover from the devastating impacts of Hurricanes Helene and Milton in 2024.

Proceeds from the event will support ongoing community revitalization efforts, further strengthening Gulfport’s commitment to preserving its heritage and fostering a welcoming environment for all.

Stetson Law Pro Bono Fair – Thursday, Oct. 24

Join us in participating in National Pro Bono Week, an annual celebration to raise awareness of pro bono initiatives and encourage further participation in the effort to narrow the access to justice gap. In celebration, students are invited to attend Stetson Law’s Pro Bono Fair on Thursday, October 24, 2024, from 4:30 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. in the Great Hall. Stop by and meet representatives of legal service organizations, government agencies, and community organizations in-person and learn more about how you can complete pro bono hours with them while making a difference in your community. Opportunities include summer internships, academic year placements, discrete legal-related activities, and community service initiatives. There’s an opportunity available to fit everyone’s schedule, interests, skills, and goals!

September Public Interest Newsletter Now Available!

The latest edition of the Public Interest Newsletter is here, packed with valuable information on pro bono, internship, and post-graduate opportunities in the public interest and public service fields.

Highlights in this September issue:

  • Returning Citizens Project (Pro Bono): Help “returning citizens” seek restoration of their voting rights in St. Pete (Sunday, 9/22 from 11:15-1:30 p.m. or Thursday, 10/3 from 4:45-7:00 p.m.)
  • Gulfcoast Legal Services: GLS has paid, part-time law clerk positions for students to work with clients who may be eligible for sealing and/or expunging their records, beginning this fall. Applications accepted on a rolling basis, so early applications are encouraged.  
  • Equal Justice Works Career Fair: Deadline to apply for prescheduled interviews is 9/12 at 5:00 p.m. EST. Summer internship and post-graduate opportunities available.
  • Immigrant Justice Corps: Apply for this 2-year, post-graduate fellowship by 10/20.

Pro Bono opportunity to register voters and help Returning Citizens (citizens with felony convictions) seek restoration of their voting rights

Provide voter registration services through the League of Women Voters (LWV) of the St. Petersburg Area and provide intake for Returning Citizens seeking help with restoration of voting rights through the LWV of Florida Reinstatement of Voting Rights Project.

When you encounter a Returning Citizen during voter registration, you’ll provide on-the-spot intake to help them identify their eligibility to receive help from a pro bono attorney. We plan to provide this dual service at events where there are likely to be Returning Citizens. We have two events scheduled so far:

Date: Sunday, 9/22/24

Time: 11:15 (set up) for 11:30-noon start. Expect to finish 1 or 1:30 pm

Mt. Zion Progressive Recovery Day Service

Location: Mt Zion Progressive, 833 20th St. South, St. Petersburg

Event details: Provide voter registration and Returning Citizen intake after Mt. Zion’s Recovery Day Service for people recovering from addiction.

Date: Thursday, 10/3/24

Time: 4:45 (set up for 5pm start) – 7pm

Sanderlin Center Voter Registration Drive

Location: 2335 22nd Ave. S.

Event details: Provide voter registration and Returning Citizen intake. Timed to coincide with food pantry hours.

In addition to providing intake services at voter registration events, you’ll have the opportunity to help attorneys represent Returning Citizens by:

  • Researching the criminal records of Returning Citizens to determine eligibility for restoration of voting rights. Among other things, determine whether there are any outstanding fine or fee obligations that must be paid or extinguished in order for a Returning Citizen to register to vote.
  • As appropriate, assisting in preparation of: (a) a request for an Advisory Opinion from the Division of Elections, to confirm eligibility to vote; or (b) a Motion to Modify Sentence to be filed in Florida Circuit Court, to request a waiver or reduction of financial obligation.

The voter registration work will be in-person work at scheduled events. The legal pro bono work will be remote with flexible hours.

  1. Attend LWV voter registration training and take a quiz after the training. The training will be recorded for those who can’t attend.
  1. Attend the LWV of FL training to provide assistance to Returning Citizens who need help determining their eligibility to vote. The training is recorded, so you can view it on your own schedule. You’ll receive nonlegal pro bono credit for the LWV voter registration training and service and legal pro bono credit for your LWV Returning Citizen training and service.

If you are interested in creating, working, or learning about nonprofit organizations and the intersection of philanthropy and the law this is a pro bono opportunity you do not want to miss!

The Alliance for Advocacy and Philanthropy (The Alliance) is seeking student pro-bono interns to work virtually on a variety of projects with nonprofit organizations in the Tampa Bay area. The Alliance is a partnership between the Community Foundation of Tampa Bay and Stetson University College of Law. It is a partnership designed to engage students in the philanthropic community and to strengthen the effectiveness of nonprofit efforts to address the needs of communities in the Tampa Bay area.

Students who volunteer for these pro bono opportunities are required to commit to working at least three hours per week for a minimum of 6 weeks starting  September 16, 2024. The preference is for longer multiweek engagements, but short-term one-time opportunities may also be available. Many of the assignments will be virtual.

While we cannot guarantee placement or host participation, some of organizations that have worked with us in the past to provide these opportunities include:

As a student volunteer, you will conduct nonlegal research and writing assignments and you may have an opportunity to conduct legal research. In addition, you may have opportunities to:

  • Learn about the nonprofit grantmaking process
  • Attend community meetings and virtual networking opportunities with nonprofit executives
  • Collaborate with a wide variety of business executives, lawyers, and philanthropists
  • Analyze socio-economic data, and
  • Assist in evaluating programmatic outcomes

If you are interested in applying for one of these opportunities, please submit a resume and cover letter explaining your interest and/or experience in the nonprofit world no later than 5 p.m. on Wednesday, September 11th, 2024.  You will be notified of whether you are placed in the Community Associates Program no later than Friday, September 13th.   You should indicate in your cover letter how many hours per week you will be available to volunteer. If you prefer an organization noted above, please indicate that in your cover letter.
