Students will be paired with an attorney or will be handling application preparations of fee waiver/reductions and applications for naturalization. Students are asked to sign up for either an 8:30am-12:00pm or 12:00-3:30pm shift. Fluency in a second language preferred, but not required. No prior experience necessary. Register to volunteer HERE. Bay Area Legal Services Advance Directives Clinic – Pro Bono Volunteers Needed Friday, April 12

Volunteer attorneys and law students will assist in completing advance directives (living will, designation of health care surrogate, pre-need guardian designation) documents. No experience in estate planning or any area of law is necessary. The clinic will take place at 800 Drew Street in Clearwater on Friday, April 12 from 11am-1pm. BAY AREA LEGAL SERVICES COMMUNITY OUTREACH – PRO BONO

Bay Area Legal Services will be conducting outreach at the George Edgecombe Courthouse on Tuesday, April 9 and April 16 from 9am-2pm. Student volunteers would help prospective Bay Area clients fill out an application for legal services and determine if they are income eligible. If the person applying is eligible for BALS services, the volunteers would then complete a statement of facts form inquiring about the facts of their legal matter. Students aren’t required to stay for the entire time, but at least two hours would be helpful. We would like to invite you to contribute to the next generation of eloquent and persuasive speakers! NCFCA Speech and Debate is seeking Community Judges March 14 – 16, 2024, to help cultivate our students and help make our tournaments happen. Around 100 students participate ranging in ages 12 – 18.  You may EARN HOURS for your service to the organization.

Please see the attached PDF for more information.  Judge training is provided.  No experience necessary!

Judging opportunities include:

Speech categories –  Speeches are a maximum of 10 minutes long

Platforms: Informative, Persuasive, Digital Presentation (use of digital visual aids), After Dinner (with humor)

Interpretations: Open (unique delivery of a piece of literature), Biblical Thematic (unique presentation of scripture), Duo (an open with 2 speakers)

Limited Preparations: Extemporaneous (student is given a current event topic to research and present findings), Impromptu (topic given with 2 minutes to prepare a 5 min speech), Apologetics (topic given and student has 4 min to formulate a 6 min speech)

Debate categories –  **If you have experience in the field of debate or public leadership, PLEASE let us know if you might be available for FINALS ROUNDS on Saturday at 4:15pm for a 5pm round.**

Lincoln Douglas Value Debate – One debater affirms the resolution while another opposes or negates it, demonstrating a clash of competing but morally defensible values.  This year’s resolution is: Rationalism should be valued above empiricism.

Team Policy Debate – A team of two debaters proposes a specific plan to accomplish the goal stated in the resolution while another team of two debaters opposes the plan and/or the resolution. This form of debate simulates argumentation in a legislative body.  This year’s resolution is: The United States Federal Government (USFG) should significantly reform its domestic transportation policy implemented by the Department of Transportation (DOT).

Immigration Pro Bono Opportunity (Legal) – Lutheran Services

Lutheran Services Florida is seeking 4 pro bono volunteers for Spring 2024 to assist attorneys in providing immigration services. Students will assist attorneys with a wide range of casework, including asylum applications, family-based petitions, naturalization/citizenship, employment authorization, and more. You’ll draft memos, conduct legal research, assist with screenings and client appointments in-person at the Tampa office, and have many opportunities for client interaction. Applications will be accepted from 2L, 3L, and LL.M students. Proficiency in one of the following languages is a plus but not required: Spanish, Arabic, Haitian Creole, Dari and/or Pashto.

  2. Engage with the non-profit community by attending community events and other possible networking opportunities.
  3. Get involved with Tampa Jewish Family Services’ Community Food Bank (if you desire). 

Student interns will be required to commit to volunteering throughout the spring semester, starting around the week of January 22, and all time spent volunteering will count as non-legal pro bono. 1Ls, 2Ls, and 3Ls, are welcome to apply. Second District Court of Appeal – Spring 2024 Internship

The Second District Court of Appeal is accepting applications for a Spring 2024 internship position working with a judge in chambers at the courthouse in Tampa (located at the Stetson Tampa Law Center). 

This is an ideal opportunity for students interested in gaining an understanding of appellate practice and the inner workings of the court, as well as improving legal research and writing skills. 

Interns will review appellate briefs and records, watch oral arguments, conduct legal research, submit written analyses, discuss legal issues with judges and staff attorneys, and attend regularly scheduled meetings. Although this internship is unpaid, 2DCA is happy to work with students seeking course credit or pro bono hours.

Please note this is a general application process.  The number of judges able to take on interns varies each semester, but all judges will have the opportunity to review all applications.  All interested students are encouraged to apply.

CAIR-Florida seeking interns

The Council on American-Islamic Relations – Florida, the state’s most prominent Muslim civil rights organization, is seeking interns. Interns would be expected to assist with new client intakes as well as providing support in a variety of their ongoing cases, including issues of police brutality, discrimination, and refugee and asylee immigration issues. This would be a valuable experience for students interested in a career in the public interest or nonprofit sectors. Interested students should contact CAIR’s intake coordinator, Silvia Nagi, at [email protected] and provide their resume along with a brief letter of intent. Students are asked to commit to completing at least 5 hours of pro bono work per week. Priority will be given to students who are able to work at CAIR’s office in Tampa for hands-on experience.

Hours are eligible for legal pro bono credit.
