Compassion Kind Foundation Event – Volunteers Needed

We are still looking for several more volunteers for our Bath Day event at Dog Bar St Pete on October 19th from 12:30-6:00pm. You are welcome to volunteer the whole time or in shifts (12:30-3:30 or 3-6). Please clarify your preference and availability.

Pro Bono Opportunity – Bay Area Legal Services (Clearwater – Sept. 18)

Bay Area Legal Services’ Clearwater office is seeking a law student to assist with Bayside Health Clinic Legal Outreach. This outreach occurs once each month and they have space for one law student to attend each event. Responsibilities will include assisting with consultations and completion of BALS intake paperwork as needed. You will be working with a Bay Area Legal Services volunteer attorney and often a staff attorney as well. To be a patient at the Bayside Health Clinic, a person must be unhoused in Pinellas County. The clinic is located at 14808 49th St. N, Clearwater, FL 33762. The next clinic date will take place on Thursday, September 18, from 1-3pm. The Alliance for Advocacy and Philanthropy (The Alliance) is seeking student pro-bono interns to work virtually on a variety of projects with nonprofit organizations in the Tampa Bay area. The Alliance is a partnership between the Community Foundation of Tampa Bay and Stetson University College of Law. It is a partnership designed to engage students in the philanthropic community and to strengthen the effectiveness of nonprofit efforts to address the needs of communities in the Tampa Bay area.

Students who volunteer for these pro bono opportunities are required to commit to working at least three hours per week for a minimum of 6 weeks starting  September 16, 2024. The preference is for longer multiweek engagements, but short-term one-time opportunities may also be available. Many of the assignments will be virtual.

While we cannot guarantee placement or host participation, some of organizations that have worked with us in the past to provide these opportunities include:

As a student volunteer, you will conduct nonlegal research and writing assignments and you may have an opportunity to conduct legal research. In addition, you may have opportunities to:

Family Forms Clinic – August – Legal Pro Bono

Bay Area Legal Services’ Volunteer Lawyers Program is seeking law student volunteers to participate in the Family Forms Clinic at the George Edgecomb Courthouse (800 E Twiggs St, Tampa, FL 33602) in August. 

The Family Forms Clinic is a free program that provides assistance to people representing themselves in family law cases in Hillsborough County. As a student volunteer, you would help pro se family law litigants complete family law forms. No experience or expertise is needed. All hours eligible for legal pro bono credit.

Legal Pro Bono Opportunity (Child Advocacy)

Lawyers for Children America (LFCA) is hosting a child advocacy training on July 10 from 12pm to 2pm for law students and attorneys interested in volunteering with their organization. Stetson law students are invited to attend in-person (if based in the Miami-Dade area) or via Zoom.

LFCA is a non-profit that recruits, trains, and supports pro bono lawyers to serve dependent children, with a focus on abused and abandoned children in foster care and youth transitioning to adulthood. Law student volunteers can be paired with an attorney to work on a child’s case, assist with a legal research issue, or help with LFCA’s pro bono manual. Training hours are eligible for non-legal pro bono, and students can earn legal pro bono hours for volunteering with LFCA.

Hello Students, Staff and Faculty,

We would like to invite you to contribute to the next generation of eloquent and persuasive speakers! NCFCA Speech and Debate is seeking Community Judges March 14 – 16, 2024, to help cultivate our students and help make our tournaments happen. Around 100 students participate ranging in ages 12 – 18.  You may EARN HOURS for your service to the organization.

Judging opportunities include:

Speech categories –  Speeches are a maximum of 10 minutes long

Platforms: Informative, Persuasive, Digital Presentation (use of digital visual aids), After Dinner (with humor)

Interpretations: Open (unique delivery of a piece of literature), Biblical Thematic (unique presentation of scripture), Duo (an open with 2 speakers)

Limited Preparations: Extemporaneous (student is given a current event topic to research and present findings), Impromptu (topic given with 2 minutes to prepare a 5 min speech), Apologetics (topic given and student has 4 min to formulate a 6 min speech)

Debate categories –  **If you have experience in the field of debate or public leadership, PLEASE let us know if you might be available for FINALS ROUNDS on Saturday at 4:15pm for a 5pm round.**

Lincoln Douglas Value Debate – One debater affirms the resolution while another opposes or negates it, demonstrating a clash of competing but morally defensible values.  This year’s resolution is: Rationalism should be valued above empiricism.

Team Policy Debate – A team of two debaters proposes a specific plan to accomplish the goal stated in the resolution while another team of two debaters opposes the plan and/or the resolution. This form of debate simulates argumentation in a legislative body.  This year’s resolution is: The United States Federal Government (USFG) should significantly reform its domestic transportation policy implemented by the Department of Transportation (DOT).

Grant Writing Pro Bono Opportunity

Tampa Jewish Family Services is seeking a pro bono student intern to work virtually on nonlegal research and grant writing projects to obtain additional non-profit funding. As a pro bono intern, you will have the opportunity to: 

  1. Gain insight into the non-profit grant writing process and learn how to write a grant.
  2. Engage with the non-profit community by attending community events and other possible networking opportunities.
  3. Get involved with Tampa Jewish Family Services’ Community Food Bank (if you desire). 

Student interns will be required to commit to volunteering throughout the spring semester, starting around the week of January 22, and all time spent volunteering will count as non-legal pro bono. 1Ls, 2Ls, and 3Ls, are welcome to apply.
