Upcoming Webinar: Abolish the Department of Education?

Stetson Law’s Center for Excellence in Higher Education Law & Policy is pleased to announce the following webinar:

Abolish the Department of Education? Implications for Institutions of Higher Education

Some Republicans in Congress have introduced a bill to eliminate the Department of Education and President Trump has teased issuing an executive order that would greatly diminish the Department’s operations. However, this is not the first time ED has been under attack. Almost as soon as the Carter Administration created the Department, the Reagan Administration aimed to nix it. But that effort in the 1980s failed to pass Congress.

In practical terms, can ED be eliminated totally? Could some programs survive and shift to other agencies? Who would monitor institutional compliance obligations with rules like Title IX? What about student aid or other financial assistance to schools?

Join Debora Osgood, shareholder at Hogan Marren Babbo & Rose, Ltd. and former National Enforcement Director for the Department of Education’s Office for Civil Rights; and Dennis Cariello, also a shareholder at Hogan Marren Babbo & Rose, Ltd. and former Deputy General Counsel for Postsecondary Education and Regulatory Services at the Department of Education, to explore the implications of the potential dismantling of ED on the field of higher education.

Date and Time: Monday, March 24, 2025 from 2:00 – 3:00 pm Eastern

The webinar is complimentary for Stetson staff and faculty members. Want to attend? Please email your request to attend to [email protected]to receive registration instructions.
