Faculty Notice for Professors with Accommodated Students in Summer 2023:

Please be advised that Summer 2023 Professors will receive an initial survey from FACSEC on behalf of Accessibility Resources, IT, & the Registrar’s Office, collecting information concerning their schedules for quizzes and midterms. Following receipt of their responses, ADA Coordinator Kathryn Pelham will schedule individual meetings with each professor to discuss the procedures for proctors, rooms, technology, and material arrangements.
The only change from last semester is the wish to have individual meetings with professors rather than communicate solely through email and surveys. Accessibility Resources anticipates that these one-on-one meetings will benefit the professors and students in their care.

From the Student Perspective: Disability and Higher Education Webinar

From the Student Perspective: Disability and Higher Education

Tuesday, March 21, 2023 @ 4:00 PM EST via ZOOM

As we approach the 50th anniversary of Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act, it is important to pause and reflect on the last 50 years and take inventory of where we are now.

Explore the experience of disability with a panel of students who will share their experiences with disability, finding community on campus, barriers, and other experiences that disabled students know firsthand. Students will also have the space to share their hopes for the next 50 years and discuss what they wish higher education professionals knew in the present day.

Live captioning and ASL interpretation will be provided.

Remembering Judy Heumann, Disability Rights Icon

Judith “Judy” Heumann (1947-2023)

Judy Heumann is facing forward and smiling.

Disability Rights Advocate Judith “Judy” Heumann, who was instrumental in securing landmark education-related laws and regulations that expanded accessibility for students and people with disabilities, died at age 75 in Washington, D.C., on March 4th. Few individuals in the disability rights and justice movement had the impact of Judy Heumann, known as the “Mother of the Disability Rights Movement.”

The Southeast ADA Center and the Burton Blatt Institute have gathered a list of memorials and remembrances of Judy, as well as links to past collaborations with her, including her Section 504 at 50 interview and her guest episodes on the ADA Live! podcast.

Judy’s impact on the world will inspire generations to come.

Pinellas County Sheriff’s Office’s “Respond With Care” Program

Sheriff Bob Gualtieri Announces New Program To Assist First Responders While Encountering Special Needs Individuals

Respond with Care

Pinellas County Sheriff’s Office

PINELLAS COUNTY – Sheriff Bob Gualtieri announces a new program, “Respond with Care,” aimed at alerting and preparing first responders of a possible special needs individual inside of a residence or vehicle.

Caregivers or individuals with a variety of special needs, including autism, hearing impairment, visual impairment, mobility/physical disability, and those with sensory issues or cognitive differences, can request a sticker to display on their vehicle or residence so that law enforcement, fire personnel, or EMS will know that they may need to make accommodations when interacting with the individual. Alerting first responders to respond with care and to be prepared for a range of situations will assist with a smooth and safe interaction for all involved.

Respond with Care Sticker for Car or Residence Windows.

A caregiver or individual with a special need wishing to obtain a Respond with Care sticker can contact the Pinellas County Sheriff’s Office Crime Prevention & Community Awareness Unit at 727-582-2222.

Once you have your Respond with Care sticker, you should display it at a prominent location on or near the front door of your residence. For vehicles, the sticker should be displayed on the rear window where an approaching first responder may see it.

For information on other PCSO programs that help individuals with special needs, please visit pcsoweb.com.
