The Passing of Trustee Emeritus Nestor de Armas

Nestor de Armas ’73 received an honorary doctorate in a private ceremony in 2020. Then-Stetson President Wendy B. Libby, PhD, made the presentation.

It is with great personal sadness that we inform the Stetson community that Stetson Trustee Emeritus Nestor de Armas ’73 passed away on Monday, Jan. 3.

Nestor was a member of Pi Kappa Phi while a student at Stetson, and he earned a Bachelor of Business Administration in Accounting before enjoying a career as a senior executive with a leading banking software company. He was an active supporter of Stetson, serving as president of the Alumni Association and on the Stetson Board of Trustees from 2001 to 2011.

Nestor was chair of the Board of Trustees from 2006 to 2010, and he helped recruit Stetson’s ninth president, Wendy B. Libby, PhD, to the university in 2009. He was named Trustee Emeritus in 2011 and inducted into Stetson’s Accounting Hall of Fame in 2016.

His wife, Donna, two of their four daughters and son-in-law also are Stetson graduates. Daughter Blythe de Armas Sheahan ’97 passed away in early November 2021, as noted in a Stetson Today article.

Nestor received an honorary doctorate from Stetson in the summer of 2020. Although the presentation and hooding were planned for that year’s commencement, they were moved to a small ceremony when commencement was canceled due to the original COVID-19 pandemic.

Please expect additional information soon as the family finalizes memorial arrangements.

If anyone would like to make a gift in his honor, The Nestor M. and Donna Hunt de Armas Scholarship Program was created in 2014. Gifts can be made here.
