"This essay focuses on the challenges and opportunities that the St. Petersburg Truth, Racial Healing & Transformation (TRHT) Center experienced in its journey from 2020 until 2023. The essay chronicles the creation of the St. Pete Racial Justice Fellowship program for students enrolled in one of four higher education institutions in St. Petersburg, Florida. The essay provides background on the structure of the curriculum for this program while detailing how the recent Florida legislation referred to as the 'Stop W.O.K.E. Act' has impacted the way in which the St. Pete TRHT Center operates. By examining the impact of this legislation, this essay chronicles the collective journey toward racial healing and transformation in a political environment that has been exceedingly threatening to campus goals. With a focus on truth-telling about how the legal system often perpetuates the false belief in a hierarchy of human value, the St. Pete TRHT Center remains dedicated to supporting a new cadre of young leaders who will work in our community to help address policies and practices that will reify racial justice.
