Those complaining about the current state of education often put the blame on the so-called 'commodification' of education. This paper points out, however, that education has always been commodified. What is of much more interest is whether - in England and Wales at least - a right to education has evolved which is more than just some sort of moral claim but actually has the status of a property right.
