The first week at Renegade Agent Marketing was really eventful. I ended up working everyday from Tuesday to Friday. After my first day, I got some feedback on my initial logo design. They liked the spacing and the font but they wanted more defined edges and something that looked more like a seal or badge. I began messing around with borders and added a strikethrough line at the bottom. I also added an arrow on top of the long part of the H to symbolize growth. I put all the different designs on one proof page along with a circular logo that I made when I was just messing around and submitted it for feedback. They liked where I was heading but really like one part in particular from the circular logo. The light bulb in the center. They asked me to get rid of the gear and replace it with the bulb and they also wanted to get away from the green color scheme. I spent the next two days making the edits, perfecting the fonts, and coming up with cool color schemes. I made sure to have the proof sheet done by friday so I could present it monday morning and get more feedback.
The main thing I took away from this week was just the overall gain in knowledge of photoshop. It had been a while since I had used the program so I was a little rusty but by the end of the week I pretty much had it down again. I really like the fact that I get to be creative at work. It makes me appreciate being a digital arts major.
Today marks the second week of my summer internship here at DME located in Daytona Beach Florida. This week I continued to design more Fathers Day gift wrapping paper. I have made many different pattern designs. I made patterns on the topic of fishing since most men enjoy the outdoors and fishing! my pattern consist of : Fish, fishing rod, cooler with text on the cooler ( Happy fathers Day). The second pattern I designed had to do with the topic of business: ties, bow ties with text on the bow tie ( Happy Fathers day) I have also designed a BBQ pattern: chef pig, ribs, and BBQ sauce on the BBQ sauce bottle it says ( Happy Fathers Day). Lastly I created a corona, lime and crown design and under the crown text says ( Happy Fathers Day) This was my all time favorite because I have gained more skills and I am finally getting the hang out pattern surface design. I am super excited for them to go up on DME giftskin website so that customers can start buying there Fathers Day gift wrapping paper!
( I also was able to incorporate a image box on all wrapping paper that i designed so that the customer can upload the picture of the “Father”)
Today was my first day as a graphic design intern for Renegade Agent Marketing. I basically just got the run through of what they do and how they work. I met the team and got my desk with a double screen computer equipped with Adobe Creative Suite. Just by chance, the owner of the company decided to take everyone out to lunch so I got to get to know everyone and get any awkwardness out of the way. Once lunch was over it was time to get to work. I was assigned my first project which was to design a logo for a website they were building. Basically, our company gets contracted to offer business solutions, marketing tools, search engine optimization, web site design, etc. The website that they are working on now is for a business that is looking to do what we do. It’s called Business Growth Experts. My initial criteria for the logo was something modern with a green color scheme and they wanted it to symbolize growth. I began brainstorming and drawing out doodles. The first thing I thought of was a tree branch or a plant. Ironically, not 5 minutes later my boss came in an said “Oh yeah, No trees or plants.” So i scratched that idea and just started working on getting the text right. “Business Growth Experts” is a lot to fit into a logo so I started to realize that the spacing of the text was the most important part. By the end of the day I had something ready to present to my boss the next day.
Monday March 11th I started my Summer internship at DME in Daytona Beach Florida. I started at 10:00 and ended at 3:00 my main schedule is Monday-Wedneday reaching 15 plus hours a week. Today I met Anna a Graphic Designer here at DME she is my main mentor and guides me in the right direction when working on projects. I also was able to meet the entire team which I found very large and amusing. Today I did mainly research on the companies website along with “GiftSkin” – one website that the company uses. This website allows customers to pick and design there own gift wrapping paper! They can choose from many designs that the designers create here at DME or they can make their own. Today I learned much about the company and what projects I will be working on this summer. My first project coming up is to design and make Fathers Day gift wrapping paper. I design this through Adobe illustrator, Photoshop and working in CMYK, since it’s ultimately a print document. Today I was able to take notes and come up with my own ideas; I even was able to through a sketch together for my first project. I am looking forward to learning much more and gaining real life experience here at DME. I am super excited to be creating many designs and patterns for cards, wrapping paper, wall paper..,etc. It is awesome knowing that I am designing and creating wrapping paper for clients!
At my last internship week with Lynne, she decided to surprise me and take me to an open event. This event was at an art museum down the street from her office. It was a “paint out” event, where people gathered to watch an artist paint a piece. I would usually be bored watching someone paint, as I have no background in fine art or know of any techniques to paint with. However, the environment surrounding was inspiring, with flowers and a lake which set the perfect scene for her painting. I think that it was nice having this experience. We were able to look in the museum at all of the pieces that had been painted during the “paint out,” most of which were still wet with the paint. After that back at the office, I began working on a new concept for another high end hair salon called “Blanca Salon.” This salon offered much more variety in design then the other salon idea that I have been working on. Lynne has offered me a position to continue working with her throughout the summer on a project basis. I am excited to continue expanding my skills and gain more experience for where ever my career path may take me next!
This week marks the end of my internship at WESH 2 news. During this week I still preformed my normal duties of assisting with audio in the morning and prepping shows in the afternoon. I also prepped more movies this week and got to tune in a couple of live trucks for the 5PM newscast. On top of these regular duties, I also explored a couple of different other departments at the television station. Since WESH is a hub station for Hearst Television, I got to sit down and with the head of the traffic department and also the local sales representative. Both of these people gave me really great in site into other job possibilities in television.
During the beginning of the week I talked with the local sales representative, Kevin Orchard. He was a very nice man who informed me of what the normal tasks of his sales reps were and also told me how sales makes money for the rest of the company. Along with that, we went over the day to day routine of a sales manager: talking to clients, maintaining accounts, and going to specific meetings. Overall this meeting was informational and taught me the importance of advertising. On the other end, I meet with the traffic department manager. Now this type of traffic has nothing to do with your car, it has to do with the organization of ads into a day to day log that you watch on TV. So when I talked to the manager at the hub she went though how she takes ads from the sales managers and puts them into a system which then organizes them into the daily log. These logs are usually finished 3 days before they are put onto television. We also went over how she communicates with the head station up in North Carolina to put this all together. This conversation was helpful to me so I could understand how the log was created in master control and to give me ideas of other job opportunities in television. To conclude, this internship opportunity truly gave me a broad understand of television and how to do the task of entry level positions in master control and production.
During my internship this week, I began a project for a Salon in Ohio named Oscars. They are combining with another salon and decided they wanted to completely re-brand, but keep the name. Lynne suggested that I try drawing out a few concepts to further develop the idea and look they were going for. I am not used to drawing things out, but sometimes sketching allows you to release all of the crazy ideas, so you can begin working on the computer with a clearer concept. At first, they did not really have a clear theme, so until they came through with one, I tried to combine some text and font choices to give them some direction as to what they wanted to convey. Eventually, they decided that they wanted a mix between something rock and something glamorous, that emphasizes a feeling of “industrial modern.” It still sounds like I have a lot of room for creativity which can be really fun sometimes! They also said they are known for their circus style lettering sign. That immediately reminded me of Chicago the movie. I am excited to continue working on this project. Some good news to add is that Lynne would like to have me continue to work with her on various projects throughout the summer. Cool!
During this last week in my internship I had the same duties as usual, audio in the morning and prepping all afternoon. On the production side of things, I learned how to properly set up the conference area on the second floor for satellite interviews. Sometimes WESH will host some special interviews for NBC since the station is a hub in Orlando. Learning the set up was easy, it was just plugging in the microphones in specific areas and calling in the IFB by a special phone attached to the chair. On the other hand I prepped the usual shows for Tuesday and Thursday, and also shaded the afternoon newscasts. Also this week I had another meeting with the programing coordinator, where we discussed different FCC laws. We went over the basic areas which consisted of children programming, captioning, profanities, and music laws. I took a lot of notes on these sections but I will give the basics for each sections in this blog. In the area of children programming, the station is required to show about 3 hours of educational children’s programming during the week. This programming must also have limited commercial times and have a certain amount of PSAs. All programming must have close captioning that is 90% correct on pre-made production and 80% correct on live productions. In profanities, the station must report any incidents to avoid being fined and music has to be paid for though major record contracts. There is so much more detail to this but this is the basic stuff that the programming coordinator also has to take care of. I am having another discussion with her next week covering ratings. Overall, learning about the FCC laws has been one of the most interesting parts of my internships thus far.
During this week in my internship I had the same schedule as usual working audio in the morning, then continuing the day with master control work. When I say I am “working audio” in the morning I am purely board operating for the noon show. I am pretty much turning on microphones and bring up music levels when necessary. I also check battery levels on the microphones so none of them die during the news cast. Some of the fundamentals of audio I learned in the intro class here at Stetson has helped me in this area. Like learning the specific measurements of sound. The second half of the day I spend this week prepping movies for the station to use throughout the month. This is a big responsibility since movies come in big reels that have up to 10 segments and they also get a lot of views, so everything has to be correct. This task pretty much took me most of the day since I had 2 movies to prep. One other event that took place this week is that I started discussion with the stations program and media coordinator. I wanted to learn more about the business itself so she kinda took me in and started teaching me. Our discussion this week was talking about the Orlando market and how it consists of three different duopolies, including WESH which is NBC and The CW. She also explained simple programming and why certain shows appear at certain times and how they correspond with advertising for the station. We ended our discussion with an introduction to some of the FCC laws, which we would discuss in more detail the following week. Overall, I was very excited about learning about television programing.
This past week of my internship was sadly cut short. I only got to go into work on Tuesday because I got into a car crash on Wednesday. I was on my way home when someone rear-ended me. Ended up going to the hospital where I found out I sprained my neck. I called into Wesh from the hospital, and they advised me not to come into work the next day. On Tuesday though I pretty much did the same thing I was doing last week. In the morning I was practicing on the video board, learning how to operate the vis (the system that flows video stored on a server to the board). The concept of the vis is hard to wrap my mind around, but luckily I am working with one of the most experienced technical directors in the building. On the other hand, in engineering I was prepping shows all day and learned how to prep shows on the video client. The video client is different from other linear editing system since it is not laid out like a movie editing software. You have to work with time codes and it is very confusing but once you have doe it once or twice, it is not as bad. Also while I was in engineering, I talked to my supervisor about shadowing a co-worker named Stephanie who works with programing the satellites. I think this would be interesting to learn about since I am getting a good understanding of everything else. Hopefully next week will be more exciting in injury free!
