Week 9 7-28 7-31

The Winner of the Contest

With a stunning upset, the first floor came in clutch and won in the end. I was told that someone bought about sixty backpacks, (which were worth the most amount of points) and swept the competition their way for floor number uno! This stunned every intern, especially when we all counted up the final tally. This was celebrated with cake for all the floors, but floor one got a trophy specifically engraved for their victory.

In the world of Claims

We had a rough week in the office, with our subrogation project taking longer than thought and our supervisor being out for a couple days it was hectic without our usual guide. But we had daily morning huddles with the Litigation team and that usually helped screw our heads on for the most part until our supervisor came back. We had more Subrogation and Depositions to sit in on and soak up for our experience. Being something new I was able to focus pretty well.

Intern meetings

With the project finished it was time to make our presentation. We present in two weeks time to the company we’ve been working at all summer. We each have a slide for our individual self, our department, and what role we played in the project. I will talk about the marketing and what went into the designs, the need to stay within the colors of the company and the addition of school like qualities. As well as the final number of donations raised. 1,489 items.

Week 8 7-21-7-24

Litigation

During this week we said goodbye to the Catastrophe team and got introduced to the Litigation team. The leader of the team happened to be the father of one of the claims interns. So it was really interesting to see just how much of a family company this company is. We learned about Subrogation, Salvage, Large Loss, Liability, Mediation, and Deposition. I even got to sit in on some of the meetings for Mediation and Deposition, both were very interesting and I wish I could explain the details for them but I legally can’t. Which is always so cool.

Another Field Trip

Moving forward I had a field trip to a company called Foundation Risk Partners and met the interns there. None of them went to Stetson but all were very nice. We got a tour of their building, an understanding of what they do there, and took a photo with them. They then came to Security First and ate lunch with us, while our CEO and President did a presentation to them about our company and all we do.

Subrogation

Our new project for subrogation consisted of accessing the claim file and determine what kind of loss it was, who was at fault, and if subrogation was needed. It takes some time for each cell in excel but we should have enough time to finish it before the internship is done.

Internship Project

With the last of the donations done this week the floor winner will be announced soon.

Week 7 7-14 7-17

The Long Week

This week was a long week, one that took a new definition to repetition. We did IA training all week long, and as an intern that meant taking notes for them rather than photos and videos. It was a chaotic week for me that has problems with stimulation. I found myself missing answers to questions and zoning out as the long lectures went on day after day. I got through it and eventually the end of the week came but it was not without it’s many struggles for me.

Intern Project update.

Other than that I had an alright week, on Monday I had free time so I worked a little more on my intern project and finished the marketing around the building for it. At this moment in time the forth floor was in the lead with the first floor being a close second.

Check in’s

During all this chaos I had a mental health check in with the HR representative that was also aiding us with the project and driving out intern meetings. I had to express the feelings and thoughts I had about the company and what I was doing there. I was not completely honest with her, because I had other things on my mind. Like will I have time to eat before the break is up and I have to take more notes? The usual stuff. Not much else can be said about this week except that it was very exhausting to me.

Week 6 7/7-7/10

The Beginning

This week I came back from vacation, so it was a little tough to get through the week. Then the week blasted by in a blink of an eye. This week was all about preparations for the big meetings that will happen next week. I had to set the room up, go to meetings to be a guinea pig as everyone ran through their presentations. Next week I’ll be in a three day long meeting and will be tasked with taking note of a question asked or an answer given.

Field Trip

We took a field trip to a facility in Sanford to see insurance claims that were fire or accident related. The first hands on thing we saw was an air purifier that combusted on its own one night in a lady’s home. We saw the professionals disassemble it completely, then they showed pictures of the house and where the purifier was and the extent of the damage. They taught us and also talked business with some workers from our office because this was an active claim. Then they showed us a recent claim that involved Brat Pitt. Apparently he was at the restaurant that burnt down for his new F1 movie. So we got to see pictures of a place called Pappa’s out in New Smyrna Beach and this place was historic for that area, seeing that it was at least four generations old. Then they showed us auto accidents that were all active claims as well, and because of that we weren’t legally allowed to take pictures.

Week 6 6/23-26

Marketing Project

In this week we have got our marketing designs approved by HR to be used for our emails, box designs, flyers, and posters. I will put them in the bottom of this post. I spent this week finishing up those designs with my team and also creating a new form on Canva for hurricane awareness since we just entered CAT (catastrophe) season. Our manager said this will be sent out via text or email for our customers once it is approved, so that’s really exciting to me.

The Rest of the Week

Besides all of that happening, it was a pretty calm week. I had meetings and one lasted all day because we were doing more CAT training with their new system for taking claims. I visited with other workers in the claims department and they showed me what they did and how they do it. One of them talked about how he started in facilities with cleaning the building and got promoted after applying for his role where he sits now. It was pretty surreal to see how far he has gone. We also had bring your child to work day and all the interns were helping with that.

The claims department showed them our CAT response unit, so the kids got to get in a fire truck and a mobile home for storm chasing. I also got to get in the truck with my own fire fighter helmet, I’ll be sure to link some photos next post.

Week 5. 6/16-6-20

The Beginning of the Week

At the beginning of this week, I was riding up to the office with a sluggish body and tired mind. I had hardly remembered what day it was and what I had done the previous days. Upon arrival I was greeted with a birthday present from the other interns and our manager. My desk was covered in decorations and two toy motorcycles, since they knew about my goal of buying one this summer.

The Work

During the week I had to work on some more projects in my department and had helped create some flyers and posters for our big intern project. A couple meetings about this project happened as well. A representative from Futures Foundation came and talked with us about what they take and that they will use the donations to supply new teachers for the upcoming school year in Volusia County.

The Meeting

The meeting on Wednesdays happened and we started to hit some roadblocks. Not with what to do but how to go about it. I feel we struggle as a group to move forward with a census and the ones chosen to be leaders for our project talk the least.

Field Trip

On Friday, I journeyed up to Jacksonville and toured the Paul Davis Restoration headquarters. We got to see many machines used for water removal. I took pictures for my office to share at the end for our presentation. They had built an entire house inside this building for flood training and flood the house hundreds of times a year.

Week Four 6/9-6/12

At the beginning of this week I was excited for two reasons. I got added to the marketing role for the internship project and it was my birthday that weekend. Which is why this post is getting out so late. I turned 21 and seemingly partied too hard and recuperated for the past three days.

Anyway, onto the main chunk of the internship. We solidified our connection to Futures Foundation and I have been tasked to make the advertisements for the building. Things like posters, flyers, and even boxes for each floor where the employees can make their donations. We plan on making it a contest between floors to see who “cares” the most. I’m planning on using Canva to design everything and use the brand for the company. This is something I have a lot of experience with since I work with the WELL Team at Stetson.

The rest of the week was very long and tedious, in the claims department they had what can only be describe as a convention for meetings and being an intern in that department, meant I attended them as well. So, for three days in a row Tuesday-Thursday, I sat in a day long meeting. There were fun activities sprinkled through however, like this presentation on how the mind perceives things and the boat activity they had us do. Me and the five other interns built a boat out of tinfoil, sticks, and straws. We then raced the others with our boat and came out on top. Not bad for a bunch of college kids I say.

P.S. Sorry this took so long, I was so sick after my party on Saturday.

Third Week 6/2-6-5

Internship Project Details

During this week we had our intern meeting. We all would come together and decide which charity we would fundraise for. We narrowed it down to two different organizations and are all doing research on the Futures Foundation and The Daytona Beach Kiwanis Club. I am personally not leaning towards either yet because I have not completed my own research on either. Donations and drives can only be for items, so no monetary donations are allowed. We would plan our project in the coming weeks, as well as go through each floor of the building to tell each department about our plan and collect items they bring in.

The Work Week

During the work week, I spent a lot of time filling in things on an excel sheet, things like if the claim went to litigation, what was the conclusion, and what kind of claim it was. With six interns in my department they gave us about 600 claims to file so we split them up in 100 each. With that and the constant training happening it was a busy week.

The highlight of the week however was when we all got to go on a field trip to two different houses asking for a policy. We had to go around and take pictures of the houses for an examiner and the six of us were able to go onto the actual roofs as well. We flew a drone around and took many pictures of the roofs.

2nd week May 27-29

This week was a short one, due to Memorial Day and me not working on Fridays. However, that did not stop the week from being filled with many meetings and trainings. Being at an insurance company and entering the hurricane season, we had to all learn and watch a presentation on what we would do in a hurricane. I learned that every department would be turned into the claims department and they would work us from 8am to 8pm.

Moving on from the terrors of hurricane season, I learned that we can begin to shadow different departments and learn practically everything about the company we would like to. We also all got mentors that we will meet with at least once a week to report all the things we do to.

Since I work within the claims department, it has been a lot of training so far, but I am finally nearing the end of videos and quizzes and nearing the start of something new.

Which brings us to the main point of the internship. Besides learning every department, all 22 interns have been tasked with finding a charity or organization to help. We have been tasked with everything, from choosing the charity to acquiring every bit of whatever we may need to donate. This can be money, clothes, toys, etc. Depending on which organization we choose.

I plan to tell the group that I can make things for our presentations and/or advertisements that will run through the building. The building has televisions in its corners and I was thinking it would reach everyone easier that way rather than going to floors everyday during work.

First Week

During the first week of my new internship, there was a lot to unpack. Both figuratively and literally. When I arrived on the first day to Security First Insurance, I was nervous and was not sure of what to expect. They welcomed all of the interns with open arms and loving smiles that said “we want you to be here.”

We sat down in a conference room and they showed us a presentation, fed us, let us do personality activities with each other and then our managers came to get us. My manager showed me my desk and told me to decorated it anyway I want.

The second day we got professional headshots taken and I talked cameras and editing with the photographers who ended up working in the same department as me.

In the middle of the week we have our anchor day meetings with all the interns. We were told we would make a project together to give back to the community. We can pick a charity or organization and decide how we want to move from there. It is very open ended.

Later in the week, we made a Canva slide to display on the tv’s in the office. It was just a simple “all about me” slide, so the workers could get to know some fun facts about us, what we study, etc. It was the first creative thing I did as I await more information on the big project that I will be working on with the other interns all summer.
