Mask Workshop

In this workshop, attendees will use the sewing machine and cricut machine to create a personalized mask. The workshop will be held within the lobby area of our Innovation Lab where these workstations are located. Using materials that are provided, they will learn to use the sewing machine and accompanying mask template to form a fitted cloth mask with adjustable ear loops. Then, a demonstration of using the Cricut machine will enable attendees to customize their mask even further with iron-on (heat transfer) vinyl.

Due to space restrictions, a registration is required to attend any of the offered workshops. All workshops will have a maximum of 3 registrants. You must use a Stetson e-mail to register. Click link to view and register for this workshop.

Career Transitions Database Access Ending September 30th

Career Transitions, one of the duPont-Ball Library databases, will no longer be available after Septembe30, 2020.  The database provider has posted the following statement:

“Effective September 30, 2020, Career Transitions will no longer be available. Please download any resumes or cover letters you may have created prior to that date to avoid any loss of data.”

As an alternative, the duPont-Ball Library recommends the database Peterson’s Career Prep.  This database will be available on the duPont-Ball Library databases page soon.

Library Building Reopening on Monday, August 10, 2020 – Read for More Details

Stetson students, faculty, and staff,

The duPont-Ball Library faculty and staff are pleased to welcome you to the start of the 2020-2021 academic year.  Access to library collections and services is available to the Stetson community whether you are on- or off-campus this semester.

The library building will open to the Stetson community on Monday, August 10th, 8:00 am, with a limited 25 person occupancy. The occupancy limit will increase to 50 people on Thursday, August 13th

Access will be by Stetson ID card-swipe, and all library users will check in with a library greeter who will track occupancy.  Additional library users will be admitted for short-term tasks such as an appointment with a librarian or staff member; to pick up material or equipment; or to checkout and read a course reserve. Student assistant greeters will provide students with suggestions for alternative study spaces should occupancy limits be reached.

Library Hours:
Monday-Thursday: 8 am – 10 pm
Friday: 8 am – 6 pm
Saturday: 11 am – 6 pm
Sunday: 11 am – 10 pm

Appropriate face coverings must be worn inside the library building, and furniture, which has been placed to ensure safe physical distancing, should not be moved.

Library collections are available 24/7 online (https://stetson.edu/library).  Physical collections will be available via pick-up or mail delivery for those students who are attending Stetson online only, and to faculty who are teaching online only.

The library will offer services seven days/84 hours per week; students may make appointments for personal face-to-face services (such as assistance on a research or Innovation Lab project). Virtual services will be available to those students who are attending Stetson online only, and to faculty who are teaching online only.  Find out more at https://stetson.edu/library

The 24/7 Lab on the library’s ground floor is open with printing and copying available.  Access to the Lab and the ground floor north restrooms will be card-swipe only.

The Nemec Courtyard and Sensory Garden will be available 24/7.  The space is available to reserve for classes (use the University’s calendar “Request Event”) and 24 folding chairs are available to classes held in the Courtyard.

Celebrate Promoted and Tenured Faculty with the Virtual Fall Faculty Reception!

At the start of each academic year, the duPont-Ball Library has traditionally held our Fall Reception to spotlight faculty members who are promoted and/or gain tenure, as well as those who have published a book in the previous academic year. Although we are not able to hold the event in person this year, we still want to celebrate their achievements! To that end, we have created the 2020 Virtual Fall Faculty Reception page.

Every promoted or tenured faculty member is given the opportunity to add a book to the library’s permanent collection. They can be books that inspired them as undergrads, that informed their teaching style, that got them into their fields in the first place, or that they simply enjoyed a lot in the past year. On this page, you can see all of the faculty honorees, the books they chose, and their explanations for what makes each book meaningful to them. In this small way, we want to honor and celebrate the contributions of these faculty (with the hope that perhaps in future years we can toast them properly in person). Congratulations to the honorees of 2020!

duPont-Ball Library Partners with Swank Digital Campus for Streaming Video

The duPont-Ball Library has partnered with Swank Digital Campus to fill streaming video needs for titles that are not available through the library’s existing streaming video databases (Feature Films for Education, Films on Demand, Kanopy). The Swank Digital Campus library is not exhaustive, but it does fill some gaps in the library’s offerings, especially with feature films and popular documentaries.

Faculty who would like to feature access to streaming video are invited to browse this research guide (https://guides.stetson.edu/digitalcampus), explaining the process of using Swank Digital Campus and requesting access to available titles.

Note: Faculty may create an instructor account with Swank Digital Campus and will then receive a verification email through their Stetson email account. Because of added email security, the verification emails may be misdirected into a quarantine folder rather than being forwarded to your inbox. We are working with IT to fix this inconvenience. Be advised to look for the verification email in your quarantine email folder before reporting a problem.

If you have further questions, email Debbi Dinkins at [email protected].

duPont-Ball Summer Clubs are Here!

Below are descriptions and intro videos for eight virtual clubs and interests groups members of the duPont-Ball Library team have decided to run this summer. Pick one (or more) that fits your passions, then sign up to join us for fun online discussion! All club meetings will take place in Microsoft Teams. See blurbs and videos below for further details.

YA book club – Dani Pleines

Hey fellow Anarchists. Do you miss going out into the world and wreaking havoc? I have the perfect way for us to pass time while we’re stuck inside our lairs: read Archenemies, the second book in Marissa Myer’s trilogy, Renegades. We’ll have three meetings, every other Friday, to discuss ideas like character motives, plot predictions, and fun hypotheticals, like our fantasy cast for a Renegades movie! All Stetson-enrolled (Summer/Fall) book club members will receive a complementary  Archenemies eBook and Cultural Credit. So join us now! Email [email protected] with subject line “Book Club” to sign up.

History of Stetson University club – Kelly Larson, Sue Ryan

The Stetson History club will meet every other week to discuss various topics in campus history. Archivist Kelly Larson and Dean Sue Ryan will be on hand to answer all your questions, show you some of the treasures in the archives, and even quiz you on a bit of Stetson trivia! Meetings will occur every other Thursday at 3:30 PM starting on May 28th. Email [email protected] with subject line “Stetson History” to sign up.

Film club – Elizabeth Martino

Stuck at home and burning through your to-watch list? Join us in movie club to discover some new favorites and reexamine old classics.  This summer we’ll look at coming-of-age movies, why they hold such significance for us, and talk about our personal favorites.  We’ll pick a different movie to watch before every meeting on alternate Fridays, starting May 29th and running through July 10th. Films are available to Stetson students and employees for free through the library’s streaming services. Grab your popcorn and let’s talk movies together! Email [email protected] with subject line “Movies” to sign up.

Theme parks club – Chris Finkle

Theme parks are fascinating nexus points of overlapping disciplines – art, engineering, commerce, cuisine, logistics, performance, and so much more. Their history stretches back a century and their footprint spans the globe, but the seat of their power is just an hour away in Orlando. Come discuss the triumphs, failures, and idiosyncrasies of the parks with other fans! There will be five meetings, every other Thursday from May 21st to July 16th. Email [email protected] with subject line “Theme Parks” to sign up.

Creative writing club – Kelly Larson, Chris Finkle

Nothing is more valuable for polishing your writing skills than working in a community of other writers. Guided by three weeks of poetry prompts and three weeks of fiction prompts, we will discuss our own and each other’s writing, culminating in a showcase week at the end of summer semester. Meetings will occur every Wednesday at 1 pm. Email [email protected] or [email protected] with the subject line “Creative Writing” to sign up.

Paranormal club – Debbi Dinkins

The duPont-Ball Library’s Paranormal Club will discuss ghosts during the summer 2020 session. Specifically, we will talk about the popularity of ghosts and ghost hunting as a form of entertainment. Club members will watch examples of television shows about ghost hunters, psychics, celebrity ghost experiences, and then discuss. Discussions may challenge your beliefs about life after death and the existence of ghosts. Additionally, we will talk about how some ghost hunting celebrities have leveraged their fame into other industries such as the travel industry and product endorsement. Club members will help guide discussions.

The Paranormal Club will meet virtually during the summer session. Four meetings are planned but more may be scheduled during the semester. The first meeting is Tuesday, May 26th, at 7 pm. Email [email protected] with subject line “Paranormal” to sign up.

Binge-watching club – Jennifer Corbin

The Binge-watching Club will discuss the phenomenon of binge-watching and we’ll do some binge-watching. Club members will recommend their favorite shows and share information about where they go to find out about upcoming series and release dates for new seasons. We will talk about what re-watching favorite shows means during a lockdown. Other topics of discussion may include the pros and cons of various streaming services, streaming services available through libraries, the popularity of re-watch podcasts, and staying healthy while binge-watching. The group will choose a show* to binge-watch individually and discuss it at our final meeting. Email [email protected] with subject line “Binge Watch” to sign up. This club will meet 4 times on Thursdays, June 18, June 25, July 2, and July 9 from 4 pm to 5 pm.

Requirements: must have access to Netflix.

*Tiger King is not an option.

Conspiracy Theory Club – Bijan Fallahi and Colette Cacciola

Are we being lied to about the origin of the coronavirus? Did forces within the US government assassinate JFK? What really happened at Roswell? If you have a burning passion to unearth the truth, or, you know, are mildly curious and have nothing better to do while practicing social distancing, grab a tin foil hat and join our discussion! We will have five meetings, every other Friday from May 29th  to July 24th. Each meeting will cover a specific conspiracy theory. Email [email protected] or [email protected]  with subject line “Conspiracy” to sign up.
